Acupressure in Childbirth

Acupressure in Labour is taught to birthing partners (husband, boyfriend, mum, sister, friend, dula) in a one hour private lesson.  Acupressure in childbirth:

  • is used as natural pain relief
  • calms the birthing woman
  • positively effects the speed & quality of contractions
  • encourages natural and efficient labour
  • is a non-invasive  treatment
  • encourages partner involvement in the birth
  • can be used at home, in the hospital, birthing centre or birthing pool
  • can precede medical pain relief, as agreed with your doctor/midwife

Acupressure is not massage but rather a technique of applying direct pressure to a set of points that are very effective and useful in labour.  Sarah Ling is a qualified Shiatsu Therapist (Japanese Acupressure) and will teach you to apply thumb, finger and elbow pressure to the points and how to find them.

Safe practice, with gentle pressure, can begin from week 37 of pregnancy.  Thumb pressure can be increased during labour to the level of the birthing mother’s comfort.

Expert, Debra Betts, generously offers a wealth of excellent information through her website, including research into prebirth acupuncture.  She offers her Acupressure Booklet as a free download.

Debra Betts’ instructional DVD can be purchased here.  Watch an introduction to acupressure here.
